Siemens completes the world’s longest and highest-capacity GIL connection in China

Siemens completed the construction of a gas-insulated transmission line (GIL) for China Three Gorges Project Corporation at the country’s second largest hydropower plant "Xiluodu". The project consisted of the installation of a total of seven three-pole systems, each with a length of 620 meters at an operating voltage of 550 kilovolts and with a power rate of 3900 MVA. The single-pole tube length is 12.5 kilometers, making this the world’s longest GIL. more

Siemens has installed first offshore platform in the North Sea

Siemens has installed the HelWin1 offshore platform in the North Sea, marking the successful completion of a significant stage in German grid connection projects. When the HelWin1 converter platform goes online, it will link the Nordsee Ost and Meerwind wind power plants to the mainland. The platform will convert the up to 576 megawatts (MW) of electricity produced in the wind power plants to direct current and transmit it via submarine cable to the German mainland 85 kilometers away. The low-loss direct current power is then converted back into alternating current at a converter station on land and fed in to the German power grid. more

HVDC Pole 3 commissioned in New Zealand – an “incredible feat of engineering”

New Zealand residents can sleep easier this winter following commissioning of the new High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) converter equipment – Pole 3 – in May. The new Pole will allow electricity transmission operator Transpower to better access New Zealand’s vast hydroelectric resources in the South Island and more effectively balance energy across both islands. Building a new HVDC Pole in the middle of an operating power system – and in one of the world’s most extreme seismic zones – proved to be a huge challenge for Siemens and Transpower. After a successful trial operation, Pole 3 was revealed to about 100 industry leaders, customers, staff and key contractors at the Haywards substation, north of Wellington, at a ribbon-cutting ceremony on 22nd of July. more

Completion ahead of schedule: Transmission completes important Hudson project supporting reliable power for New York City

The Hudson project was completed by Siemens Energy Transmission and commissioned six weeks ahead of schedule, on June 3, 2013. The Hudson project is a High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) project that connects power from New Jersey to Manhattan through a HVDC station and a 7.5 mile (12 km) underground and underwater cable. It is capable of providing 660 MW of power reliable power to New York City, approximately five percent of the City’s peak demand. The contract was awarded to Siemens Energy, Inc. by Hudson Transmission Partners, LLC, managed by PowerBridge, LLC of Fairfield, Connecticut. more
